Papers, 1814-1881.

The papers of Edward Cunningham of Milton, Mass., mainly concern the firm of Russell & Co., in which he was a partner. Russell & Co. transacted commission business in Canton, Shanghai, and Foochow, China. The papers consist of accounts, agreements, and correspondence, mainly letters from Russell & Co. to Cunningham. Other correspondents include: John Murray Forbes, Paul Siemen Forbes, and Francis Blackwell Forbes. In addition, there is an annotated copy of the constitution of the Shanghai Steam Navigation Company (1860s), and an 1881 discourse by Cunningham on Chinese laborers in the U.S. and the treaty to prohibit Americans from engaging in the opium trade with China.
